Green Consumers - For the past three years, the "green" marketplace has been one of the fastest growing, most dynamic sectors of the U.S. economy. The surge in environmental awareness that began in 2005 has transformed from a popular cultural trend into a major force for change in a range of markets. A $17.7 million business in 2003, Mintel, the Chicago-based market research company says the green cleaning category quadrupled sales to $64.5 million by 2008. By 2013, Mintel anticipates eco-friendly cleaners will do an astounding $623 million in business and account for 30 percent of the household cleaners market by then (compared with 3 percent last year). Now it would be one thing if America were on some wild spree to spruce up, but green cleaning is showing this growth at a time when the conventional cleaning market is stagnant. The broader category grew only 7 percent - which is actually a decline of 7 percent when you factor in inflation - from 2002-07.

The Earthsense Eco-Insights Survey reveals that older Baby Boomer women (aged 55-64) are often responsible for the most green behavior and purchasing of green products. In fact, this demographic group is 16 percent more likely to fall into the Earthsense “Green Core,” the one-third of U.S. consumers who buy 70 percent or more of the green products purchased, and are more likely than the rest of the population to act and buy green. To provide greater insight into the lifestyle characteristics of the Green Consumer Base, Pitney Bowes Business Insight used its PSYTE® neighborhood segmentation system to identify three psychographic clusters where these consumers dominate.

Professional Duos - Comprised primarily of high-earning professional couples and householders with professional degrees, these residents are found in all major metro areas. People in this cluster are 45 percent more likely to be part of the Green Core than the rest of the population. This cluster’s ethnic mix is 75 percent white, non-Hispanic and 25 percent ethnically diverse. Their mean family income is $116,000 and many are doctors, lawyers and educators.
Retirement Horizons - These empty-nest married couples are college-educated dual earners looking forward to retirement. People in this cluster are 31 percent more likely to be part of the Green Core than the rest of the population. More than 90 percent are white, non-Hispanic with a mean family income of $74,000.
Old Metro, New Hands - With an age profile under 45, this cluster is about 35 percent immigrants, primarily Hispanic from Mexico and Central America. Mean household income is $47,200.

Pet Industry - According to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, 63% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.1 million households. In 2008, $43.2 billion was spent on pets in the U.S., of that 10 billion was spent on pet supplies. In 2009, it is estimated that 45.4 billion will be spent on pets, of that 10.2 billion will be spent on pet supplies.

Air Freshener/Deodorizer Industry - About 75% of US households use air fresheners, supporting an American industry worth estimated to be worth $1.72 billion in 2007, a 50% increase over $1.1 billion in 2003.

  3. Industry Outlook

Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products - US - January 2009 Market Size and Forecast report said they were more concerned with the environment now than they were one year ago. Worries about the health and safety effects of toxic chemicals in traditional household cleaning products on one's family have swayed consumers to a category that was once led by independent brands such as Simple Green, Seventh Generation and Method. Seven in 10 Mintel respondents said they worried about chemicals in household cleaners and four in 10 cited allergies as a reason for buying eco-friendly cleaning products. Approximately 50 million Americans suffer from some form of allergy, according to the report. Increasing safety concerns over conventional cleaners is leading industry experts to project that green household cleaners will continue to increase over the next 5 years. A 2004 study published in the journal Occupational Environmental Medicine found that about 29% of people with asthma said air fresheners caused breathing difficulties.
